Frequently Asked Questions

About the Homes
Q: How many homes do you build each year?
A:
A Soldier’s Journey Home builds one home each year. This allows us to focus our full attention, resources, and care on each veteran recipient. See highlights from our most recent build here.

Q: Why do you build only one home per year?
A:
ASJH is a 100% volunteer-driven organization. Most volunteers have full-time jobs and donate their personal time—many using their annual vacation—to make each build possible.

Q: Do you really build a home in two weeks?
A:
Yes. Site preparation (land clearing, grading, utilities, and foundation) occurs months in advance. The remainder of the build—including construction, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, and furnishings—is completed in just two weeks. Watch the full build process here.

Q: How are the homes adapted for each veteran?
A:
Every home is custom-designed to meet the veteran’s specific needs and may include zero-step entrances, wider doorways, accessible kitchens and bathrooms, roll-in showers, and other mobility-supporting features.

Q: Do veterans pay anything for their home?
A:
No. Every ASJH home is delivered mortgage-free, at no cost to the veteran.

Veteran Selection
Q: Who is eligible to receive a home?
A:
ASJH serves post-9/11 U.S. military veterans with service-connected disabilities who demonstrate a need for a specially adapted home that will significantly improve their independence and quality of life.

Q: How are candidates selected?
A:
ASJH works with military and veteran service organizations to identify potential candidates. All candidates are thoroughly vetted and approved by the ASJH Board of Directors.

Q: Is there a specific region where you build?
A:
No. ASJH builds wherever the selected veteran chooses to live, however most of the homes so far have been built east of the Mississippi River.

Donations & Support
Q: How is A Soldier’s Journey Home funded?
A:
Our work is funded through individual donations, grants, corporate and community sponsorships, and in-kind contributions of labor and materials.

Q: Are donations tax-deductible?
A:
Yes. A Soldier’s Journey Home is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Q: How much does it cost to build a home?
A:
Costs vary based on location and accessibility needs. Donated labor and materials significantly reduce expenses, allowing donations to have maximum impact.

A:

Q: Can my company or organization sponsor a build?
A:
Yes. Corporate and organizational partners are essential to our mission. Sponsorships may include financial support, in-kind donations, or volunteer participation. Contact us to learn more.

Q: What if I can donate services or materials?
A:
In-kind donations are critical to our success. Email Info@asjh4vets.org to discuss how your contribution can help.

Volunteering
Q: Can I volunteer to help build a home?
A:
Yes. ASJH relies entirely on volunteers, from skilled tradespeople to general helpers and support roles.

Q: Do I need construction experience to volunteer?
A:
No. Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. Skilled professionals provide guidance, and safety is always a priority.

After the Build
Q: What happens after the home is completed?
A:
The home becomes a permanent, mortgage-free residence for the veteran and their family. ASJH maintains lasting relationships with the veterans we serve and celebrates their transition into a fully accessible home.
